A Log of my fitness stuff and ponderings thereon
Current Goal: Lose fat off belly/work on flat belly by September (Lino's Wedding!)
15/06/08
Went to Vas's TaeKwon Do training session on Sunday - was exhausting. Sauna afterwards at Warwickshire Club (£10!). I was really stiff on the Wednesday afterwards. Just before football!
19/06/08 ish..
Played in the 11 aside football team against the undergraduates in the Department - not bad but I really need to up my fitness (that 'running all the time' fitness you need to play midfield). I felt very run out a lot of the time, rather than overall exhausted so the potential is there! Picked up a couple of injuries, a bruise/twinge in my back and I think a cracked or bruised rib. Its still feeling uncomfortable on breathing a week and a half later - but no real bad complications or anything. Hope it will go away soon!
28/06/08:
Fiona's wedding - felt terrible all day - perhaps annoyed at nothing to do on Friday night - perhaps bad sleep due to noise - but was unable to get to the church ceremony - traintracker told me the wrong times!
Anyway had Burger King for evening meal - shocking! lots of protein.. but really! Then way too many drinks. Got home OK and then had viallis cheese and chips! No wonder I was a bit ill the next day.. Had super long sleep - hope its regenerating me old muscles as well as detoxing the liver! - must try not to drink until at least friday!
30/06/08:
Swam twice - once at lunch and about 6 lengths before evening Sauna.
Breakfast: none
Lunch: Colin's retirement food - 2 sandwiches, onion bhajis, cheese and pinapple.
Evening: Two-egg omelette, watercress some crackers and hummus.
Couldn't sleep despite Sauna and Exercise - so had Julep as nightcap - nice!
01/07/08:
I just went for a 7 mile run/walk (last night) with some weight (with Tom)- a pleasurable experience! I found the going OK and in parts I would have been happy to push myself more. I don't feel too bad today either - a bit of tightness in my lower back and I felt a bit exercised this morning - but not stiff. My lower back tension will stretch out, but I have cricket tomorrow (again a staff v students) and am a bit worried that it is going to get in the way of totally enjoying it.
Breakfast: a two-egg omlette (protein!) with 20g or so watercress (goodness! Iron!)
Snacks: Banana at 9am, mozzerella, tomato, rocket salad at 11
Lunch (12.00): Mozzerella, Tomato and Rocket Salad
At 13.16 I am craving carbohydrates, or coffee (perhaps also for the sugar I like in espresso). I hope my body will get it and try to burn some fat!
(am convincing myself more and more that I look better - know its early illusion, but still better than feeling fat all Saturday!)
24/07/08:
Over past few weeks have been doing at least one hour of excercise a day - including and sometimes plus some home weights and abs work - the home stuff is usually very minimal but as a bonus its good. I have bought a whole new set of clothes recently (with help from Ann.. thanks!) and some visits to the Next sale. Did OK I think for someone who doesn't buy clothes very often..!
My fitness regime at the moment is roughly: Some dumbells and very few sit-ups/stability exercises each morning, Cycling into work a few times a week (currently down because of Brompton puncture scenario) and trying to just walk a little more up and down stairs etc. I'm also regularly doing the 'holding the stomach in'.. I mean 'engaging the abs' during the normal day, sometimes expanding to Keigel excercises (well you never know!).
After that it is:
Sunday: 4 or 7 mile run/walk with pack
Monday: Gym Session or Cycle 5 miles or more
Tuesday: Circuit Training
Wednesday: Other.. This week it was another run with pack - 4 miles
Thursday: This week will be British Military Fitness at Coventry otherwise its cycling to work.
Friday: Volleyball at lunch.
I'm also trying to eat more protein after reading articles about it and finding out I ought to be eating about 200g of it a day. I now have 3 eggs for breakfast (20g ish), Sardines (2 tins or so) for lunch (40g), then a meat-ish meal in the evening (last night chicken fried rice - probably too many carbs (ha listen to me!). I read another article about a TV presenter who went on a 'no carbs after lunch' diet to reduce body fat so I am trying to do this where socially possible.
I feel a bit fitter and can definitely hold my stomach in more.. but the slight bulge is still there when I relax so I have a way to go.
This week my gym session was at 'Pure' health club in bedford street. I went round all the machines doing mid-paced exercises. with an intention to do another slow sets round.. but the sauna was too tempting (and some muscles were already hurting) so I gave the second set a miss. I think that this would be a good workout plan though...
In the sauna I dispaired at the obvious gym rats drinking big protein shakes.. it is all a bit silly the way our society has taken us..
28th July 2008
So this weekend was a bit of a write-off excercise wise. I was exhausted on Friday, despite only doing volleyball and so treated Saturday as a recovery day - during which I kept the protein up, but also the carbohydrates (beer).
Picked up fridge freezer so that can properly plan food and store lots of cooked meals for later eating - this will save money too.
So... weekend exercise was:
Saturday - Shopping - 4 hours of walking
Sunday - 2 Hours of Tennis, 30 mins weights session plus abs in evening - ate steak and chicken..
Monday (will be) Gym session in Leamington then back onto usual
04/08/08
Monday - Gym Lunchtime - Running Bear - good long workout
Tuesday - Circuit Training
Wednesday - Small lunch workout (free weights)
Thursday - ?
Friday - Volleyball Lunchtime, 4 Mile run/walk with 10kg
Saturday - Nothing! (Some home working out)
Sunday - Gym Session (Pure)
Bought loads of frozen meat and made up 9 Dishes of food for eve meals etc - have bought enough food for a month with about £25 - that means I'm saving about £70 a month Bonus!
Monday - Gym session (some free weights) Sauna then 1.5 hours of tennis.
Tuesday - Football evening 18.30 - 20.00
-- Long break on recording!! --
In winter I put on some weight, and stopped doing exercise at the same rate as before - this winter was a super exercise in subsitence living, with a typical daily budget of around £1.50 for food - porridge every morning, cheap home-cooked lunch from the freezer- either irish (lamb) or Chicken Stew or Chilli (mostly).
I have settled down and worked hard to accept my shitty a-level student never went to University job.
This saved me a lot of money and probably meant I was eating better than before. Much less salt and fat in this food. I managed to keep the heating off a lot too which was OK but winter wasn't always pleasant!
I did keep up occasional fitness classes, the usual volleyball and some football in the spring. My home weights got used a bit, but I rarely use the dip bar I put up in my hallway..
It is now 06th July 2009.
I have just re-started a new fitness programme that was due to start in May but I had a suspected fracture in my wrist after 'falling over' - that and breaking up a printer!
My record in the last two weeks was Circuits on Tuesday and Thursday (missed one), Pilates on the Monday Lunchtimes and volleyball on the Friday.
I ducked out of the Chemistry Cricket match because of the wrist and sat and drank!
Drinking has probably been the worst part of my fitness programme! I still drink about 15 pints a week or so!
I'm starting hardcore fitness and hoping to continue for one month!
Started this Sunday - 1hr 20mins on Exercise Bike preceded by Weights - several exercises.
Plan is:
Minimum:
Monday - Pilates
Tuesday - Circuits at Uni
Wednesday - Football or Gym equivalent

Week Three:
15 july 2010
Have continued with miliary fitness all through winter, with a break in Feb, and have been usually going twice a week as a minimum. On top of that I have been playing volleyball every week, and football every now and again, sometimes for two hours or more and sometimes twice a week. Some of us from military fitness have also started up a Sunday running club with the aim of completing the Birmingham half marathon in October - I have been on three out of maybe six of these runs and will try to keep up at least that level of activity util the event.
Re the 'goal' of flat(ish) belly by Lino's wedding - not achieved, but re getting much fitter now and looking a bit like I have a flat belly - achieved! I just hope that this time I manage to get through winter.
If you see my posts under 'life understanding' you will see that part of me hopes to see my old friends again, so it will be nice to look and be quite fit if/when I do. Other than that, this better f'in prolong my life!! :)
