We are always learning aren't we? I am!
Things I have learnt formally in the last four years:
Languages:
- French: Two years' worth of French.. and a French Girlfriend.. got to 'Lower Intermediate' before being frightened by Intermediate (all in French?!) Can read and understand basic French quite well - not sure it is 'my' Language- but enjoyable
- Spanish: Two and a half years' of Spanish starting at Beginners - For some reason Spanish eludes me - I can watch a slow dramatic politician on TV, and understand him, but normal Spanish I find too hard.
- Arabic - Tried one term of Arabic after being inspired (and humiliated) by Moroccans who could communicate in three or four languages whilst being v poor. Found it OK, but I needed to work at this and couldn't afford the time. I nearly remember some and make people from the middle east laugh with things like 'no problem' and 'hello' hmm..
- Italian - now this is more 'my' language. I have some good Italian Friends and love the culture of the south/napoli. This has helped a weird affinity for the language and I'm progressing well. This is my second year and I am at lower intermediate. Next year I'm stepping up two levels.
Marketing/Business
- One term of the four hours a week Marketing Communications Course. Warwick Business School. I participated in the assessed presentation and project, but not the final exams (I was part-observer). We passed.. but didn't come first because.. horror of horrors, we considered the cost of our project. Others had done things like spend £2million on a campaign designed to raise £3million without realising that this meant they needed to raise £5million to hit the overall goal. We spent much less than that.. and would reach more people.. but as cost wasn't assessed we got a lower mark! I wonder which businesses are like that....
